Tour BrochureTour InformationTour Reservations

Preliminary Tour Itinerary

Itinerary: Kigoma, Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania
Duration: 5 days

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Your IBEX tour begins with your arrival at the Dar es Salaam Airport. After clearing immigration and customs, you will be met and transported to the Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel for the remainder of the night.

Day 2: Depart Dar Es Salaam and travel to Kigoma

In the morning, you will return to the Dar es Salaam Airport and board the scheduled flight to Kigoma at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. Following your arrival, you are met and transferred to the Hilltop Hotel. Located on a hill and surrounded by picturesque landscapes and gardens, this hotel consists of 30 cottage style, self-contained, air-conditioned rooms and offers spectacular views of Lake Tanganyika (Africa's deepest Lake) and the majestic Congo mountains. After checking into your rooms and lunch, you will join your local safari guide and travel to Ujiji: the oldest town in western Tanzania and the historic western terminus of the 19th century slave and ivory caravan route from Dar-es-Salaam, Bagamoyo and Zanzibar. This is where Richard Burton and John Speke first reached the shores of Lake Tanganyika in 1858. It is also the site of the famous meeting on November 10, 1871 where Henry Stanley located Dr. David Livingstone and uttered the famous words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?".

Day 3: Depart Kigoma and travel to the Gombe Stream National Park
In the morning, you will be transfered by boat to the Gombe Stream National Park and your accommodation at Gombe Forest Camp. Gombe was made famous in the 1980's by the American primatologist Jane Goodall, whose work here brought the plight of chimpanzees to the attention of the world. After lunch, the tour will journey into the forest in search of chimpanzees. Although Gombe’s chimps are usually reasonably close to the camp at a feeding station, it may sometimes be necessary to go deeper into the forest to locate them. The forest reaches right down to the beach where you should see plenty of birds, butterflies and other primates, such as olive baboons have been the subject of researchers since 1967 and you may also find Vervet, Blue, Red-tail and Colobus monkeys. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded from the park and you may also swim or try your hand at paddling a dug out canoe on the lake.

Day 4: Guided tour of Gombe Stream National Park and the Kakombe Waterfalls

Following breakfast, the tour will depart with your guide in search of chimpanzees. You may also have the option of climbing up to the beautiful Kakombe waterfalls or to Jane’s Peak. There are approximately 150 well habituated chimps in Gombe and you can sometimes get within 5m (16ft) of them. In addition to observing the chimps, visitors can swim in the lake or hike in the forest. You may see bushbuck, bush pig, and a variety of birdlife.

Day 5: Depart from Gombe Stream National Park and travel to Kigoma, Dar es Salaam and Arusha
In the morning, you will return by boat to Kigoma and board the scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam and transfer to a flight to Arusha to meet up with the rest of the IBEX Safari Tour of Tanzania. You will be met by your Unique Safari guide and transferred to your accommodations at Mountain Village.
